bus in our front yard the bus already had 12 people when we got in. after us, we picked up 4 more. our bus tour guide was called David and our bus driver, Meme. David told us Meme used to be a guide to, but he lost his eyesight. He talked a lot about Costa Rica and the city of Cahuita. The 3 staples of Costa Rica are pineapples, bananas and coffee. Cahuita used to host the Bri Bri tribe. Turtle hunters from the french islands like St. Maarten decided to settle. the town used to be bigger than puerto biejo, but tourism in puerto viejo has made it three times bigger than Cahuita.

big breakfast it took us one hour and twenty minutes to get to the restaurant for breakfast. we had fried rice, eggs, mini sausages, strawberry yogurt and mixed fruit (watermelon, pina, banana, papaya). it was soo yummy. Janek and i didn't have watershoes, so we tied our shoes to our feet with string.

Ricky Bobby it took us 40 minutes to get to the rafting start point. On the bus, we were briefed by Ricky, our safety kayaker. He told us the rules, safety and what to expect. Pacuare is a class 3-4 river. The last 700m is class 5. He was really funny and animated. David gave us our boat assignments. It's 6 to a boat.

Jimmy was our raft guide.

down the river
we sat in the raft with three girls from NYC. the river was so beautiful. we hit rapid after rapid with almost no paddling in between. we saw indigenous tree huts and overnight WWR lodges. There were basket pulley systems for the tribes people to get from one side of the canyon to another and bridges too. the trees were really tall and we saw a lot of waterfalls. one time, jimmy guided us into the water. I was the first one out every time. near the beginning of the trip, we were in a class three rapid and joke's paddle flipped up and hit me in the face. it caught my upper lip and cheekbone. my lip is swollen, but you can't really tell in the pictures.

fell-ure
right before lunch, we went through a class four rapid that threw janeck, joke and me out. we were in get down position, i was holing onto the rope, but the raft titled. my feet went over my head and i pretty much rolled out of the raft. i was still holding the safety line when i fell out but then a wave took me away. i held onto my paddle, but it made it hard for me to stay feet up and feet first. i hit two rocks because i was facing the wrong way. when i reached a raft, the guide was like, "save her! save her!" they pulled me up and when jimmy's raft came by, i jumped back on. janeck was rescued by a safety kayaker. Joke was close enough to the boat to be pulled back on. janek's flip flop broke.

lunch
halfway through our trip, we stopped by the side of the river to have lunch. the guides cut up fresh watermelon and pineapples. we made ourselves burritos with salsa and chips. lemonade was served in this paper cup that has fold out handles! for dessert, we had trail mix and river cheesecake (guava and cream cheese on a digestive cookie).

second half
we went through another hour of rapids, then we were back at the restaurant. we changed and looked at pictures of us on the rafts and in the water. they gave us evaluation forms to fill out. we loaded our luggage onto the bus going to san jose.

hostel pangea
we checked in and paid for two nights. i used internet to check email and update my blog. i had a bacon cheeseburger with fries for dinner. it was really yummy. i continued using internet until 11pm. then we all went to bed. i listened to music until 2. it was hard to fall asleep because i felt cold and itchy.
